Boston, MA April 25 - William Kiernan, the Director of the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI), received the Joseph M. Collins Human Service Award at the Massachusetts Association for the Blind (MAB) Community Service Gala on April 25, 2007. This award is named after Joe Collins, who was the CEO of MAB for fourteen years and devoted his career to improving the lives of others.

Kiernan has served at ICI for more than thirty years and is recognized as a national leader in integrated employment and developmental disabilities. He is an inspiring teacher and advocate committed to the concept of inclusion. His work has affected the lives of millions of people with disabilities. ICI promotes the inclusion of people with disabilities in their communities through training, consultation, clinical and employment services, and research.

ICI, in conjunction with UMass Boston Graduate College of Education, operates the Northeast Regional Center for Vision Education (NERCVE). NERCVE is the only academic center in New England for preparing Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments and Orientation and Mobility Specialists. Those two specialties being key in helping people with visual impairments achieve their goals of high quality education, employment, and independent travel.

ICI is a University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities based at the University of Massachusetts Boston and Children's Hospital Boston.

The Institute for Community Inclusion is a national disability research and training center based at the University of Massachusetts Boston, with additional offices at Children’s Hospital Boston.
